Surprising Reason Women Lose Teeth....

According to an old saying, "Every child costs the mother one tooth" may have a little bit of truth to it.

Research was published this week that shows women who gave birth to more children tended to lose more teeth than their counterparts that few to no children. There was no difference in the socio-economic lines either. Rich or poor - the tooth lose occurred nearly the same.

The study was done by examining long term data of 2600 US women from the ages of 18-64 and sorting that data into three types: low, middle and high socioeconomic status.

In the highest socioeconomic group, women with no children were missing on average less than one tooth, those with one child were missing about two teeth and those with four or more were missing about five teeth.

Among the women in the lowest socioeconomic group, those with no children on average were missing two teeth, those with one child were missing an average of three teeth and those with four or more were missing more than eight teeth.

The trend also held true in the middle socioeconomic group, said the researchers at New York University and Yale University in Connecticut.

A similar study was done in the 1980's in Scandinavia and nearly identical results were recorded.

The reasons however weren't clear. Women can be more prone to gingivitis when they are pregnant and most women limit their dentist visits when they are pregnant.
